AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA

DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS EDUCATION (2001-2007):

Prepared NCATE/PSC program reports for accreditation

visit held in April of 2004. Results indicated that there

were no program-specific weaknesses, as opposed to the

last visit (1999) in which several weaknesses were

reported.

Coordinated student internships including faculty assignments

for the supervision of student teachers.

Designed course schedule for four (4) faculty members.

Advised all 130 undergraduate and graduate business

education students. In addition to the departmental

advising time-frame, advisement was conducted

throughout the semester in turn, as part of the Director

of Business Education’s major role.

Served as a liaison for the Colleges of Business and

Education to ensure that the Business Education Program

is aligned with the Teacher Education Program.

STUDENT RECRUITMENT EFFORTS:

Recruited 400 students since August 1, 2001. The following

aggressive strategies were implemented:

Analyzed current programs in demand by market place: programs of study were changed/updated and approved by the Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS) to reflect the high demand placed by the students for more program flexibility and availability.

Used direct mail, telemarketing, updating student database.

Attempted to recruit minority groups by speaking at international student meetings, ethnic group gatherings, and the Managing Cultural Differences course.

Regularly conducted Candidate Exit Questionnaire and Employer Surveys.

Truly committed to providing outstanding service to students, making the “academic excellence in a personal environment” a reality.

Purchased an exhibitor’s space to promote the University of West Georgia’s Business Education Program at regional conferences such as the Georgia Department of Education's

Business and Information Technology Conference (BIT), usually held in Atlanta, every October. Students from the Curriculum course were invited to participate and, as a result, engaged in a wonderful learning experience.

Regularly conducted a roundtable at the Georgia Department of Education’s Business and Information Technology (BIT) Conference usually held in October of every year to promote the Business Education Program at the University of West Georgia.

Articulation Agreement: the purpose is to coordinate the efforts of instructional and administrative personnel of secondary public school systems and the University West Georgia’s Richards College of Business. This process eliminates undue entrance delays, duplication of course content, or loss of credit at the postsecondary level. High school students have been able to earn postsecondary credit when meeting the criteria jointly established by the secondary and postsecondary personnel for several business courses.

Made direct contact with prospective students that have inquired about the Business Education Program and appear on sheets distributed by The Graduate School.

Made direct contact with prospective students everywhere (i.e., Supervision of student teachers at local and regional schools, Director took the time to approach other students). Visiting students to their campuses has shown to be highly effective in recruiting students.

Built institutional image online. Developed Business Education Program Web site found at: http://www.westga.edu/~jgaytan/bused. Maintained regularly.

Faculty in the department have included students work and other recruitment strategies in Business Education newsletters such as the Georgia Business Education Association Journal and the Southern Business Education Association (SBEA) Reporter.

Provided “one-on-one marketing” through the use of personalized electronic packets including information letter, program of study forms, schedule of course offerings for next 7 years and other forms.

Developed color brochures to promote the Business Education Program. Brochures were distributed extensively.
